The Dental Assistant's Role in Identifying Malocclusion
This course is designed for the entire dental team to build foundational knowledge of occlusion, including how to identify signs of malocclusion and occlusal discrepancies during patient exams. Through lecture, case studies, and hands-on exercises, participants will learn to recognize occlusal patterns, read occlusal markings, understand the functional impact of malocclusion, and enhance their role in documentation, patient communication, and treatment planning. Learning Objectives Define occlusion and malocclusion in clinical terms. Identify common types of malocclusion (Class I, II, III; crossbite, open bite, deep bite). Recognize clinical signs of occlusal disharmony, including interpreting occlusal markings. Apply the use of articulating paper to detect and document occlusal discrepancies.. Support documentation of occlusal findings and markings in the dental record.
